A new study suggests
NEW YORK – According to Australian researchers if diabetes is treated aggressively, it can be the guarantee to put off heart problems and deaths better than standard treatment that is used to lower blood sugar.
It was the second large study (as thousands of patients were involved in it) that showed no heart benefit from significantly decreasing blood sugar levels of the diabetics. Experts opined that doctors must follow the suggested aimed levels.
Almost two-third of diabetics die of heart disease. The researchers attempted to push down blood sugar to usual levels to notice whether it protected the hearts of high-risk patients with Type 2 diabetes or not.
The outcomes of that Australian study show that there was no difference in the number of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular deaths between the groups that were given intensive or standard care. Earlier this year, a similar U.S study was stopped as it showed no advantage and reported an inexplicable greater number of deaths in aggressively treated patients.
But this Australian study gave a positive result as it reported almost one-fifth decrease in kidney disease that is a common problem among diabetics.
Both studies have been released on Friday and will be presented at an American Diabetes Association meeting in San Francisco. The results of half-done U.S. research were offered during February when the research was closed down.
Almost 250 million people globally and 21 million in America are victims of diabetes that means there is not proper regulation of sugar in their blood and majority of them have type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can damage heart, blood vessels, kidneys and eyes.
Experts suggest some other measures to lower heart risks. Proper diet, exercise and medications like aspirin and other cholesterol and blood pressure controlling drugs can be more useful instead of the aggressive measure.
The researchers, in the two studies, used such a test as tracked average sugar levels for the period of two to three months. In the U.S. the suggested level is under 7 for the diabetics while people without diabetes have around 5.
