rheumatoid arthritisTrial data seems to suggest that a monthly injection may help to halt rheumatoid arthritis in almost half of all patients.

To halt the condition in which the body attacks its own joints, the antibody drug tocilizumb works together with a current treatment methotrexate.

The drug is still awaiting for approval by drugs regulators in the US and Europe and Roche will sell it under the brand name RoActemra after approval.

The study has been presented at a meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.

Though it is said that nothing can be done to reverse the damage that occurs due to RA, the new results indicate that if two drugs are taken together, they can get remission by halting the disease progression.

The trials (involving 1,190 patients) showed that the use of tocilizumab with methotrexate halted the condition in 47% of patients while it was only 8% when methotrexate was given alone.

Women, who suffer from complications due to autoimmune disorder antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), may avoid miscarriages by the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs (statin), a new study suggests.

People who suffer from APS develop such antibodies in their bodies that target phospholipids that are considered the basic components of cell membrane. APS is considered to increase the risk of miscarriages in women with low risk pregnancies ninefold and 90 percent risk of miscarriages in women with high-risk pregnancies.

In their study, the researchers (from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City) injected cholesterol-lowering drugs into mice with APS prevented activation of white blood cells that harm the fetus. The findings have been published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation October issue.

Can Fart Gas Affect Blood Pressure?

blood pressureAccording to the US researchers, the gas that comes out with many stink bombs may also play a role to control blood pressure.

The foul odor of flatulence is the result of those small amounts of hydrogen sulphide that are generated by bacteria live in the human gut.

However, it appears that the gas can also be produced by an enzyme that is found in blood vessels.

The tests in mice may help to find some new treatments for high blood pressure, the Science journal says.

Researchers from John Hopkins University, Maryland, discovered that the gas was generated in the cells along with blood vessels by an enzyme named CSE.

The researchers engineered the mice to be deficient in this enzyme and they found that levels of hydrogen sulphide were quite reduces in a comparison with normal mice.

Diet and Cancer Risk

dietary-factors.jpgDietary factors play a key role in much of our risk for developing cancer and this link between cancer and diet is not new, as a report issued by Scientific American in 1892 showed that the cases of cancers were common in those people who had excessive meat-eating habits. Similarly, the results of many other studies have shown that cancer is quite common in the people who consume diets rich in fatty and meaty foods. Contrarily, the people who consume such foods as contain grain, vegetable and fruits, the chances of developing cancer are the least common in them. The reason is that these foods not only affect the action of hormones in the body, but also affect the strength of the immune system. There are many such vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidants in the body as help it to avoid cancer and boost immune system as well.

The results of a Chinese study (considered the largest on diet and lifestyle) showed that low-protein diets not only inhibited the initiation of cancer, but also proved quite helpful to block cancer growth. But we must keep in mind that all proteins don’t have cancerous effects and especially the proteins receive from plant sources do not promote cancer, even if high levels of these proteins are consumed.

Aside from obesity and inactivity, almost one-third of cancer deaths are related to a poor diet every year. No doubt, none can guarantee that you won’t develop cancer, but you can at least avoid it if you quit smoking and eat healthy diets.
