LIVER DAMAGE and LIVER FAILURE

Liver damage refers to impaired liver structure (liver cells, vessels, biliary ducts) due to any cause. A mild liver damage, like in fatty liver, may cause only little impairment of liver function and no or few symptoms, while severe liver damage may lead to life threatening liver failure.

White Diarrhea Due to Gallstones

Normally, bile, produced in the liver, is temporarily stored in the gallbladder and from there, after a fatty meal, expelled into the duodenum.

Gallbladder stones may press on the main bile duct and obstruct it from the outside, thus preventing the bile flow into the duodenum. A small gallstone may move from the gallbladder into the main bile duct, thus obstructing it from the inside. Symptoms of bile duct obstruction include one or more of the following:

Toddler’s Diarrhea, Chronic Diarrhea in Small Children

Toddler’s Diarrhea

Diarrhea refers to increased frequency and water content of stools.

Small children between 6 months and 3 years of age (toddlers) who drink a lot of fruit juices (especially apple juice) may have an ‘unexplained’ chronic diarrhea (lasting more than 2 weeks). Fruit sugar fructose from fruit juices, delivered into the small intestine of a small child in excessive amount, drags water from the intestinal wall into intestinal hollow, thus causing the so-called toddler’s diarrhea.

Gluten Intolerance, Wheat Intolerance, Wheat Allergy, Celiac Disease

Gluten Intolerance

Some people have diarrhea after ingesting gluten-containing food (wheat, rye, barley) but they have no intestinal changes and no characteristic antibodies tTG IgA, EMA igA found in the blood. This condition is called gluten intolerance and it is not an immune disorder (1). The term is often mistakenly used for celiac disease.

Prevention is by gluten-free diet.

What Is Celiac Disease (Celiac Sprue)?

Celiac (Greek koiliakos = abdominal) disease is an inherited malabsorption disorder affecting the small intestine, in which symptoms like diarrhea and bloating are triggered by a substance gluten, present in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats.

Celiac disease may be mild or severe and may affect children or adults. It is considered as a life long disease and requires permanent gluten-free diet to be controlled.

Other names for celiac disease: celiac sprue, non-tropical sprue and gluten-sensitive enteropathy.
