A type of white blood cells when affected by the bacterial infection like ‘pneumonia’ for a prolonged period can transform in to the ‘tumor cells’. This is basically the initial stage of ‘Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Disease’.
A recent study conducted at the “Linköping University in Sweden” has made successful attempt to explain the reasons for such a transformation. The “Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)” is one of the most common types of leukemia that happens among the adults. The “B Lymphocytes”, a specific type of white blood cells is mainly responsible for producing the antibodies. These antibodies help in fighting the bacteria and viruses that people generally get exposed to. The events in particular are however not known until now.
Researchers have been successful in establishing that the antibodies produced by CLL have specialization in recognizing specific structures present on the bacterial surfaces along with the self-proteins of the human body like auto antigens.
Findings of this research study will be published in the hematological journal “Blood”. These findings also mention that the CLL antibodies get bind with dead or damaged’ apoptotic cells’. It is an indicator of the ‘B Lymphocytes’ giving rise to the CLL as the frontline cells for defense. These lymphocytes were considered to performing an important assignment of applying their antibodies to create a rapid bond with the identification of a slightest breach skin or the damaged mucous lining caused by the bacteria or other micro-organisms.
Researchers also observed that the typical ‘B lymphocytes’ could begin multiplying with excessive or rapid rate in case if an infection that is present for a long time. Such a situation will probably result out in the increased risks of chromosome damaging. This damage would increase the vulnerability for a leukemia transformation.”It contributes to our understanding of how these B lymphocytes function and why they can be transformed into tumors”, say the researchers.
According to the data analysis of the study researchers found that almost 500 people in Sweden are affected with CLL related disorders every year. The people who are in the age group of 65-70 years are more vulnerable for such impacts. Researchers also observed that compared to women, the men are at greater risks of getting afflicted with such infections.
The study highlights at the same time that the course of diseases is much varied and there are hardly any treatments available to the suffering patients. In absence of the treatments many of them die within a time period of few years only.
