Sounds do magic in our life. Sounds make us live better and help us understand the world around us. But don’t you think we take sounds for granted.

How deaf people do all that. It should be totally different fro these deaf people to understand the sound of a child’s laughing, a dog’s barking, a bus horn, and even a warm hello from someone deer to them. Deaf always wish they could hear and understand these sounds and noises.

Bionic Ear

And here is good news indeed. A “Bionic Ear”, a new innovation that would change the face of this ‘silent world’ in coming times, has been successfully devised by the scientists. World is about to come alive for deaf people.

I will never forget that first beep. It’s like, oh, there’s sound”, exclaimed Phyllis Lee when she could hear sound with the help of such a “Bionic Ear” recently.

Phyllis Lee always had a dream to hear the sound of water running on the dishes when she cleaned them up after her dinner. And one day after all, it all changed. Her dream came true and she could hear the same sounds that she always wished for.

Phyllis Lee is not the only one who has been blessed with the gift of “Bionic Ear” but there are 500 more such people around the world who would also be among the recipients of this “Bionic Ear”, the “Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI)”. “More than 80 percent of patients that get the auditory brainstem implant will hear and understand sound,” says Dr. Bradley Welling at the ‘Ohio State University Medical Center’.

The “Bionic Ear” or the “Auditory Brainstem Implant” will help in opening new opportunities in this world of sound and will also help in improving the quality of life of these deaf people.

The device is specifically designed to help deaf people in understanding the environmental sounds. It will also be of much value to understand speech and lip-reading in a better way. Ultimately the device will aid them in improving with their own voice quality and modulation of their speech.

The “Bionic Ear” or the ABI receives sound waves in to a microphone. These sound waves are then processed a box that is worn at the waist. A magnet then transmits these sound waves in to brainstem of a deaf person and finally it is processed as a noise.

The ABI device helps in restoring limited hearing for deaf people who unfortunately have lost their auditory nerves.
