Almost 25 million Americans are affected with ‘Osteoporosis’ every year and 80% of these people are women, according to a recent report of the ‘National Osteoporosis Foundation’. This disease is mainly responsible for thinning of the bones and this may result in to hip fractures and spinal fractures in addition to some extreme complications leading to severe health problems, the report says.
The “Bisphosphonates (BF)” is the compounds that are generally prescribed for patients suffering with this kind of disorders.”Fosamax”, the ‘alendronate sodium compound’, is one such very popular class of drugs which helps in preventing bone fractures. In ‘Osteoporosis ‘patients who are also suffering from some cancerous disease, this drug prevents bone metastases and other related skeletal problems. The types of cancers may include multiple myeloma, metastatic breast cancer, and prostate cancer.
A new disease, the ‘Osteoporosis of Jaw(ONJ)’ emerged out in the year 2003.Researches conducted revealed that the prolonged use of ‘Bisphosphonate’ drugs was mainly responsible for this outbreak.ONJ is a typical disease that crops up by bone necrosis and prolonged exposure of the jaw bone to any oral cavity. Among the aged people this problem has been found to be more common. In case where the oral surgeries have been performed or the patients have suffered through a trauma of jaw bones this problem also persists.
John T. Grbic at the Columbia University’s ‘College of Dental Medicines’ conducted follow up research on ONJ incidences. He made serious attempts to identify the risk factors and pathogenesis of this deadly new disease.
Recently, there has been much attention paid to the pharmacology of the Bisphosponates. John T. Grbic has analyzed data that supports use of these BFs therapy for the patients with oncology and non-oncology problems. He emphasized upon the potential pathogenic mechanisms that are primarily responsible for development of the ONJ.
Application of BFs makes significant impacts on the ONJ patients, according to some initial reports. It is good to treat patients with osteoporosis and cancer with BFs. Dr. Grbic and co-researchers conducted their study involving almost 7,000 patients and could establish that use of BFs for treating osteoporosis will not make any significant effect on the incidence of ‘Osteonecrosis.
Clinicians have been facing greater challenges for treating patients who have been exposed with Osteoporosis and cancer problems.
