After deaths of three babies from contaminated milk formula, Chinese officials have announced to launch a countrywide testing of all dairy products.

According to the officials, more than 6,100 babies got illness after taking milk contaminated with the chemical called melamine.

Different tests of these milk formulas showed that around 69 batches from 22 companies had banned substances in their milk formulas. The Chinese government says that the dairy market’s supervision is flawed and it is quite disorganized.

Two out of these 22 companies have exported their products to Yemen, Gabon, Burma, Bangladesh and Burundi, but it’s not clear yet whether toxic batches are involved.

Among these three deaths, two were reported in Gansu province while the third fatality was reported in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the Health Minister, Chen Zhu told.

He further told that around 1,000 children were still in hospital and around 150 of them were facing acute kidney failure. He said that  all affected infants were receiving free medical care.

Li Changjiiang, who is head of China’s quality control watchdog, told that more than 5,000 inspectors would be sent nationwide to monitor dairy product manufacturers and testing melamine in their products.

Melamine is used in the production of plastics and it is added to the fresh milk that makes it appear higher in protein content.
