The psychiatric community divides mood disorders into two categories and they are unipolar and bipolar disorder. They both are a kind of depression with some difference in conditions the patients have to go through. People who suffer bipolar disorder (Also called manic depression) have to face intense mood swings in depression and episodes of high energy or extreme mania.

While the unipolar disorder or depression is a kind of mood disorder that can be divided into several other kinds of depression including:

1) Dysthymia 2) Major depression 3) Seasonal affective disorder 4) Postpartum depression

The continuous feelings of sadness, guilt, despair, loss of appetite, suicidal thoughts, constant fatigue and irritability are characterized as mood disorders. The combinations of these thoughts and feelings occur in a different way in different people and it is quite important for sufferers to seek professional help to get rid of these different symptoms. Most of the time, these feelings are considered normal in daily life, but when they keep going and last for weeks, months or years, they are considered as mood disorder and need some sort of psychiatric or medical treatment.

It has not been known yet what is the exact cause of mood disorders. It seems that several combinations of outside events lead to trigger an episode of mood disorder. Some studies have shown that most of the people who suffer from mood disorder begin to develop a chemical disorder in their mind and it makes them more susceptible to these depressed feelings. Similarly, some other studies also prove that different sorts of mood disorders can run in families as genetic trait.

There is not any fix treatment for mood disorders as they vary according to the kind and outside influences that cause this disorder. Illness, some life changing event and drug or alcohol abuse are some major outside influences in most of the cases of mood disorders. Aside form treatment, these influences are also considered vital to be dealt with for a successful mood disorder treatment.

In most of the mood disorder cases, anti-depressant medication are used .Similarly, a therapy or a combination of medication and therapy are also used to treat mood disorder. It becomes quite easier for the sufferer to get successful treatment if s/he seeks proper treatment for it. But, a sad fact is that almost more than half of the people with such disorders become silent sufferers and don’t like to seek someone’s help that is quite essential for them.

For mood disorder nearly hundred different medications are prescribed daily and the large of these medications are consisted of mood stabilizers or anti-convulsants. These medications must always be prescribed by a specialist mental health practitioner and they must be according to patient’s symptoms.
