Dimebon was once used to treat hayfever in Russia, but with the availability of new better drugs, it was taken off the market. Now according to a new study, the drug has the ability to significantly improve the symptoms in Alzheimer’s patients.
It has the ability to improve memory, behavior and aptitude to perform usual activities like eating in dementia patients, the U.S researchers found.
Many experts are quite hopeful about the promising results of these new findings.
The trial that was carried out in Russia, 183 people who had untreated mild to moderate dementia were included and 20 mg of dimebon 20 was given to half of them three times a day while the others were given a placebo.
Then, they were given tests like doing simple tasks and memorizing a list of words after a period of six months.
It was found that the patients who were taking the drug were less badly affected with the disease.
The trial was further continued in a smaller group for further six months and it was noted that symptoms were quite improved among those who were on dimebon.
It is not known yet how Demebon works but it shows protective effect on nerve cells in the brain of the animals.
“The current improvement observed in the research was significantly important,” said study leader Dr. Rachelle Doody, from Baylor College of Medicine Houston, Texas.
According to Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Trust, “It is quite encouraging that they have announced an additional phase III trial.”
“We need more research in this connection as there are more than 700,000 people in the UK who are facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias and we must offer hope to them,” Rebecca further added.
It has also been agreed by the Alzheimer’s Society that further research is needed in this connection.
