Linda Rittenbach had to struggle with her weight throughout her life.
Rittenbach who is mother of two grown children said “People get bigger and bigger and then go for the doctor who tell you, ‘You are fat and need to lose weight’”.
Despite of Rittenbach utmost efforts, as she tried almost every diet and workout, she couldn’t reduce her weight and at last the doctors suggested weight loss surgery.
“There was something in my head that was stopping me and suggesting ‘Don’t do that,’” Rittenbach told during last week.
She might have not found yet if she didn’t visit different doctors this spring for flu-like symptoms.
She was quite shocked when doctors told her about a 140-pound cancerous tumor that was growing near her stomach. According to doctors, it had been growing for 15 to 20 years.
“Doctors told me that I had two options,” Rittenbach stated, “One is death and the other is life” Chances of survival were 20 percent if I had surgery and if I didn’t go for surgery, I would have to die at home in front of my family and I didn’t want that.”
In Redmond and Oregon Health University in Portland, doctors made three operations to remove the tumor.
Both the kidneys were also removed to complete the surgery but the doctors could put only one back as the other was badly damaged in surgery and couldn’t be saved, Rittenbach‘s doctors told.
According to Rittenbach friend Judy Evanoff, now she is back on track as the healing process is getting complete.
“I was quite shocked by the size of the tumor” said Dr. George Tsai of St. Charles Medical Center –Redmond.
According to doctors, this kind of cancers doesn’t respond to radiation or chemotherapy and it is possible that the slow-growing tumor may come back and we will have to watch for it.
