According to a new research, a substance found in broccoli may restrict the damage that causes serious lung disease (COPD).In UK, almost 30,000 people die of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) every year and it often occurs in smokers.
The US researchers found that the activity of the NRF2 gene in lung cells considerably increased because of sulforapane.
In a recent study, sulforapane has also been found protective against blood vessels damage occurs because of diabetes. Similarly, Brassica vegetables like broccoli are also associated to a lower risk of strokes and other heart diseases.
In this study, researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine noticed a considerably slower activity of the NRF2 gene in patients with advanced COPD.
The study has been published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and it says that NRF2 is responsible to turn on a lot of mechanisms to remove such toxins and pollutants as lead to cell damage.
The researchers concluded that the boost in NRF2 activity could be very handy for the prevention of COPD progression.
In this study, the found that sulforapane was helpful to bring back the reduced levels of NRF2 in cells.
The British Lung Foundation says: “It is, indeed, a helpful study for the 3 million people in the UK who suffer from COPD”
