Wednesday, June 18— The psoriasis drug Enbrel has been recommended by the panel of U.S Food and Drug Administration advisory panel. The medicine has been approved for children who suffer moderate to severe forms of the skin disease.
In a 7-5 vote with one refraining, the medical experts stated that the drug appeared effective but they also expressed concerns about increased risks of severe infections like tuberculosis and melanoma.
Another drug manufactured by Amgen has already been approved to cure rheumatoid arthritis in children in adults as well as in children while psoriasis (a skin disease that is marked by red scaly patches) only in adults.
On Monday, the agency staff told that an analysis of its record of bad events demonstrated that there were cases of serious infections, malignancies and neurological problems found in children who had Enbrel.
The concerns about Enbrel which showed by the advisory panel were almost same to those raised Tuesday while it voted commonly to commend approval of ustekinumb ,a Johnson & Johnson proposed drug to cure psoriasis in adults.
On its Web site, the FDA warned last Friday that ustekinumb might raise users’ risk of cancer and other neurological problems. According to the report of the Wall street Journal, the FDA stated that it possibly required to asses further safety data prior to decide the drug increased the chances of cancer or not.
The panel appraises the two drugs by following an FDA safety review started last month on the drugs known as tumor necrosis factor blockers that are given to treat autoimmune disorders like juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
The major concerns being studied are whether those drugs have links with the growth of cancer particularly lymphoma in kids and youngsters that are treated for Crohn’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis.
