eye blinkEye Blinking” normally happens whenever there is any stimulation, audio or accompanied by an unconditioned stimulus which leads to eye blink. However it may be a result of a facial irregularity may have been resulted due to exposure to alcohol in the prenatal stage.

So this facial irregularity not only offers new insight into the field of alcoholism, they may help to provide an important clue in identifying children who are prenatally exposed to alcohol. However not all the children share the same symptoms with ‘Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)’.

The children, who are exposed to alcohol consumption when they are in fetus, develop certain identifiable craniofacial abnormalities and eye blinking is also one of them, so they may help in identifying such children, especially those who lack any other kind of distinguishing FAS features.

Sandra W. Jacobson, a professor in the ‘Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences’ at the ‘Wayne State University School of Medicine’ studied and found that the over indulgence in alcohol consumption during pregnancy harms “Eye Blink Conditioning (EBC)”, so she found an interesting scope in it to spot out the disorders which happen due to this prenatal exposure to the children. She had many studies conducted on animals to prove this. The study was conducted on a large sample of children. A regular follow up of such children was one to establish the relation and all the data was collected related to the prenatal exposure to alcohol and other drugs.

The study was conducted among a large group of women and their children among the population of the ‘Western Cape Province of South Africa’ where heavy consumption of alcohol was observed specially during the weekends. So there was high incidence of FAS in that region. After many sessions they found that the EBC deficit does not occur only due to any impairment in the IQ, which is already an established syndrome, but also can be seen as a direct effect of the fetal alcohol exposure.

Since this deficit can be clearly identified happening among the infants as young as five year old and shows a clear relationship between one brain areas to this learning deficit experienced by the FAS children, it can prove to be an excellent basis for designing remedy programs to identify such infants at early age and intervene. This could be clearly boosted if the effects of alcohol consumption could be brought out in light among the other age groups. It can be a great breakthrough as it can lead to successful diagnosis of exposed children lacking the distinctive symptoms related to FAS.
