Nature has created a very useful and balanced environment for all the living things to live in a peaceful and joyful world ensuring their health at the maximum. Natural environment is the key to the survival of the various species and a slight change in any of the components of an environment proves fatal to the organisms living in it. In biological terms a natural befitting environment in which a number of species live together while co-operating and coordinating with one another is called an ecosystem and the study of relationship between an organism and its environment is called Ecology.
Composition and working of Human Environment
Same is the case with man whose natural environment is “the earth” and its surroundings where he lives. Human ecosystem or environment has two main factors; i.e. biotic factors and Abiotic factors. Biotic factors involve only the living factors whereas Abiotic factors are the non living factors both of which are responsible for the normal working of an ecosystem. If there keeps a fine natural balance between the two types of factors, all goes well for the organisms and they live on happily. But on the other hand, if any of the components is not working properly, the whole ecosystem gets disturbed and the organisms can never lead a normal happy life in such an abnormal ecosystem. Then it becomes very much important to set right the ecosystem as early as possible by removing the causes of disturbance so that the normal living of the organisms may be ensured. Such is the importance of an environment for a species.
Factors involved in Poor Environmental Health
Now let’s come to our own environment in which we live and lead an active, thrilling life which centers round the overall condition of this very environment of ours. At the very outset, God be thanked for a countless times for providing us with such a beautiful environment which is also excellently balanced in every respect. Unfortunately, this is not so anymore because our healthy environment has changed a lot due to the pollution of different types. Environmental health is extremely endangered because of water, air and noise pollution. Poor or bad condition of environmental health is due to the cruel working of these three types of pollution.
So far as the water pollution is concerned, it is mainly due to two reasons. Firstly, the disposal of various domestic and industrial waste materials in the fresh water. Secondly, the mixing of oil and petroleum products in sea water. Both of these reasons cause so much water pollution that it becomes almost impossible for both the land life and the sea life to survive smoothly. Moreover, sub-oil water is also getting polluted due to many harmful substances being absorbed by the soil. These pollutants are reabsorbed by the root hairs of the plants and damage the plant life as well.
Air pollution caused mainly by smoke and harmful gases is also a major factor involved in poor environmental health. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) released by refrigerators, deep freezers, air-conditioners, etc. are constantly adding to the atmosphere. Besides, the smoke from motor vehicles and chimneys of factories also pollute the atmosphere to the extent that the ozone layer present at the top of our atmosphere has been damaged a lot. This layer is responsible for absorbing ultraviolet and other harmful sun-rays which are not suitable for our skin and damage it badly. Now because of the damaging of the ozone layer, these harmful rays are also pouring down on the earth causing a lot of health hazards in the human beings.
In addition to all this, Green House Effect and Global Warming Theory are also affecting the environment very badly and, consequently, the weather cycle has changed a lot. Now a number of things about the weather have become uncertain and confirm prediction of the weather condition is almost impossible nowadays.
Noise pollution has also destroyed the peaceful environment all around us. Loud music and frequent use of pressure horns in crowded areas has badly affected the hearing of human beings and it has become a threat to the peaceful surroundings.
Precautionary Measures against the Poor Environmental Health
Being aware of all this grim picture of the environmental health, it is our moral duty to do a lot to keep our environment hygienic. Man being the supreme creation, must know fully well how to live in a given environment and also how to purify it if it gets polluted due to his own activities. No doubt, serious attention is now being paid to this universal or world wide problem but still a lot remains to be done in this regard.
Anyhow, following measures must be helpful if we want to improve the environmental health.
- More and more trees must be planted throughout the country because the plants are in fact, the lungs of nature. They filter the polluted air and make it fresh and oxygenated for the human beings. Massive cutting of trees has also aggravated the situation and the new plantation of trees will be much helpful in this connection.
- Waste material of any type whatsoever should never be disposed of casually or carelessly. Disposal of waste materials in fresh water or into the air creates a lot of problems which enhance pollution. Such disposals should be treated in retreatment plants in order to be reused or they should be taken to remote areas and sub-grounded there.
- New factories or industries should be set up outside the urban areas and the already existing factories should also be shifted from the urban areas to the remote ones.
- Water treatment plants must also be installed for the filthy water to be refined so that it must be supplied to houses.
- Heaps of dirt and dunghill should never be piled on the roads. Instead, they must be disposed of away from the population.
- Transportation of oil and petroleum products should be handled very carefully. Oil tankers must be kept in good condition in order to avoid any mishap.
In addition to all above, each and every individual must be responsible for keeping his surrounding as well as the overall environment neat and clean. It is a collective responsibility to be shared at the national as well as international level. May God enable us all to keep our earthy home pollution free forever and ever.
