Honey soothes throats and helps calm coughs. Honey is the best alternative to the drug laden cough syrups. Honey has been recommended for ages by grandparents in several cultures like Indian.

A recent study established this fact and paved a big hope for the parents who are looking for such harmless alternatives. So next time when your children catch cold and cough, better raise your hands to take the golden nectar bottle down in your kitchen.

 Honey

The study findings have been published in the “Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine” on December 3, 2007.It says that the children who were given a spoonful of ‘buckwheat honey’ just before going to the bed had deep sleep and coughed less. On the other hand, children who received a dose of any generally prescribed ‘over-the-counter cough suppressant’ did not show equal results even any nearer to this level. The level of relief was no way observed in the children who did not receive any medication.

“This is the first time honey has been actually proven as a treatment,” says Dr. Ian Paul, the lead researcher at Penn State College of Medicine.

Researchers conducted their study involving 105 children belonging to the age group 2-8 years. The study applied a randomized and partially-blind approach. Children were not given any treatment on the first night of the study. Specifically designed questions were asked to the parents regarding their children’s sleep and cough conditions and the sleeping patterns .Parents were also required to furnish information about their own quality of sleep.

Subsequently, on the second night of the study children were given either ‘honey-flavored cough syrup’ or’ honey’. Some of the children were not given anything on this second night also. Parents were asked again to respond the other set of questions.

Findings of this study revealed that parents whose children got honey reported a better sleep and symptoms. This helped improving them with their own sleep at the same time.
Dr. Ian Paul impressed upon the quality and type of honey as it plays an important role in the treatment. He adds further, “Darker honeys have more antioxidants than lighter honeys, and we wanted the best chance to see improvements”.

Researchers observe that lighter honeys would probably also benefit kids.’ Buckwheat Honey’ is generally available in local markets. Honey is also obviously less expensive than ‘over-the-counter medications’ including the cough-syrups. Honey causes none of the side effects like dizziness or sleepiness.
