‘Intranasal Insulin’ is one of the devices to inject insulin developed to make the insulin intake to be less painful than the other methods. They are diagnosed to control the problem of obesity which is one of the resultant factors of diabetes. They decrease the food intake however a new study has shown that this is more likely to happen among men than women who don’t show that desirable levels of obesity control with insulin administered intranasal. The compound seems to be giving more desirable effect on enhancing the memory function among women.
This new study has been reported in the “Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM)”.
Gender plays an important role in determining the changes brought by brain insulin which brings alterations in food intake and other cognitive functions of the body. This is emphasized in the new study which shows that Intranasal Insulin brings higher decrease in the levels of plasma glucose concentrations in body. However obesity seems to be better controlled among men due to control on food intake. It also brings desirable improvements in the memory among the patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. However in this case too, the gender differences are evident. Intranasal Insulin shows better memory improvement among the women.
“Our findings indicate that gender is a critical factor in brain insulin signaling that affects both food intake and cognitive functions,” said Dr. Christian Benedict of the ‘University of Lubeck’ in Germany.
This study was conducted among a controlled group of 14 men and 18 women who were given Intranasal Insulin to study the after affects of insulin on control of central nervous functions such as energy metabolism and memory processing. A series of cognitive tests followed later. An evaluation was done of their food intake in a breakfast buffet. The researchers tried to study the effects of a single dose of intranasal insulin on the above cognitive functions and to determine how gender differences affect the results.
After intranasal administration, the insulin solution is seen to be more effectively atomized due to the use of nasal spray device. During its use, the penetration of insulin is better in the nasal cavities which allows it to enter the cerebrospinal fluid compartment and alters brain functions in the absence of substantial absorption into the blood stream.
This consequently controls various central nervous functions such as the neuroendocrine control of energy metabolism and memory processing. The saturable transport system helps in the insulin reaching the brain more effectively and binding to the brain receptors which are biologically located in cerebral cortex, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, cerebellum, and hypothalamus.
New study has shown better sensitivity towards the central anorexigenic actions of insulin found among the men whereas women show better responsiveness towards the cognitive affects.
This study has given rise to possibility of development of more effective intranasal insulin therapeutics taking these gender differences in consideration.

Hi,
The article is just great! It was pleasing to know that there is another way to improve memory among women and that is through intranasal insulin. Also alarmed to know that even gender plays an important role.
