To terry.

The next time, before washing your hair, go with the hand and fingers through hair - if you will have a greasy feeling, you have oily hair (and scalp) and if not - then probably not. In oily scalp, dandruff shed off in flakes, though, not really in small dust particles.

Dandruff is often caused by overgrowth of scalp yeasts, which are normally present in certain amount on the human scalp. There are several anti-dandruff shampoos and other products available in pharmacies without prescription.

Hi,
I have a very itchy scalp with lots of fine white dust. I wash my hair once per week and get relief for about a day before the itching starts and last through the week. I have oily face but is n ot sure if my scalp or hair is oily as well. I live in a tropical climate and would love your help.
What do you thing is the cause of my itching with scalp dust?
Thanks in advance.

Jvern,

was it severe burn? In this case it may last quite some time that all burned skin is replaced with new one.

My husband sunburned his head about two months ago. Since then, it has been itchy. It is a little bit red, but that it all. We have tried several different shampoos, oils, lotions, anti-fungal creans, nothing is working. Any ideas?

To wondering 84.

It's quite possible the crystals are from dried oil, secreted by hair follicles due to seborrheic dermatitis. This can be caused or aggravated by fungi - scalp ringworm. Anti-dandruff shampoo (works against fungi) or other remedies (read the dandruff part above in the article) can help - they have them in pharmacies. If this doesn't help, a dematologist might give more info what triggers excessive oil secretion on your scalp.

I have been wondering if I have the plain run-of-the-mill dandruff or something more. For 6 years I've been coming across bumps on my scalp that feel like grains of salt. They don't necessarily itch but they are always on my scalp and I always pull them off. They aren't flakes of skin. When I run my fingernails across my scalp I feel the bump and pry the bump off with my nail. The 'bumps' look like clear crystals, kind of like salt, and they are firmly attacked to the root of my hair follicle so I end up pulling alot of hair off my head because I'm trying to get rid of these yellowish grains that are attached to my head. Is this a form of acne? What can I do to stop this? I am losing alot of hair from pulling these things out.

Thanks in advance

Tony,

a common cause of acute, localized hair loss is fungal infection (Tinea capitis - scalp ringworm). I recommend you to visit a dermatologist to get diagnosis, and, if it is ringworm, anti-fungal drugs by mouth.

My scalp has been itchy for the past 2 weeks; primarily along the part of my hair and on the left side. Along my hair part, I have noticed a decreased amount of hair.

Annie,

allergy to certain hair product and folliculitis are two possibilities.

It can help if you take hair products you use with you to allergologist and have a skin test. If it is folliculitis, doctor can prescribe (probably oral) antibiotics.

Hi, about 15 years ago I my hair started to thin. It started with an intense itching. I actually use that spray that made you look like you had thick hair. I get acne on my head every now and then. I still have itching. They tested my scalp and nothing. But they gave me no solution. I noticed my daughter's hair is thin too. She usually uses my hair accessories. We need help!
