To compare different approaches to weight loss many some U.S. researchers who were working on a study found that weight reduction could be doubled if a food diary was kept. According to these researchers, the participants lost more weight if they had more and proper food records.
The researchers from Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research conducted the study and it will be published in the American Journal of Prevention Medicine’s August issue.
The study has been considered as one of the biggest and longest running weight loss preservation trials ever made, the researchers told in a press statement. It is also somewhat unique that most of the participants of the study (almost 44 %) were blacks and had increased risks for diseases like cardiovascular problems, diabetes and many others that becomes worse because of obesity.
Dr. Jack Hollis who is lead author of the research said “People who keep regular and frequent food records tend to lose more weight”, Hollis who is also a researcher at Kaiser Permanent’s Center for Health Research I Portland, Oregon further adds:
“People that keep routine food records lost double as much weight as those who don’t maintain any record. Apparently, it looks that the act of writing down the routine consumed food boosts people to have fewer calories.”
The trial has been named as WLM or Weight Loss Maintenance trial and it has been carried out at four centers to judge the different approaches to maintain weight loss for a period of 30 months.
Under this trial nearly 1,685 obese (with 25 to 45kg/m2 body mass index or BMI) participated in 20 weekly group sessions .The participants were aged 25 and over and they antidylipidemia or blood pressure medication. The study will also be available online in August.
