A new surprising study suggests
CHICAGO – “Childhood cancer is most common in the Northeast”, a new surprising research suggests that even surprised the experts. However, according to some specialists it would reflect just dissimilarities in handling reports.
This is the first government study to know specific regional differences in kids’ cancer. Some experts believe the study offers significant information to support smaller studies that confirm cancer is not frequently found among the children.
The study has been conducted by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and founded on data which represent 90% of the U.S. population. The results show that almost 166 out of very million kids are affected by the cancer. This small number of affected children proves that childhood cancers are rare in the country.
The rate was highest in the Northeast where 179 cases were found in every one million children while in the South there were 159 cases per million children which is the lowest rate. According to some experts these reported cases can be the outcomes of under-reporting in the South while over-reporting in some other parts of the country.
While, there were almost similar rates for the West and Midwest as 165 cases per million were reported in the West and 166 cases per million in the Midwest.
The occurrence of cancer in the boys was 174 cases per every million while 157 cases per million cases in the girls. Similarly, on ethnic basis it was around 173 per million in white children, 164 per million in Hispanics and 118 per million in the African Americans. It was also found that there were higher rates of cancers in teenagers than younger kids.
In the study, total 36,446 cases were identified and 2001-03 data from state and federal registers was analyzed in it. The research will be published in the June issue of Pediatrics that is released on Monday.
