Poisonous Plants - Symptoms After Ingestion
List of common poisonous plants with symptoms, if ingested (click links for description and pictures) (1):
- Aloe vera (leaves)
- Amaryllis (roots)
- Apple seeds in large amounts - depression of breathing
- Apricot seeds (and leaves) – convulsions, depression of breathing
- Bitter melon seeds may be toxic for children
- Black (wild) cherry (leaves, seeds) – gasping, pupil dilation, coma
- Blood lily (Africa)
- Cassava, manioc, tapioca (raw roots or tuber peels) – staggering, convulsions, coma
- Castor beans (seeds)
- Elderberry
- Elephant’s ear (all parts)
- Fava (broad) bean (broad bean) – headache, diarrhea (toxic for some people in the Mediterranean area)
- Flax (in large amount) – convulsions, paralysis
- Foxglove
- Ground (Jerusalem) cherry – hypothermia, loss of sensation, diarrhea
- Horsechestnut (leaves and sprouts)
- Indian turnip (raw stem) – burning mouth
- Mayapple (apple, leaves, roots)
- Monkshood
- Nightshade (bittersweet) (leaves and berries)
- Oleander
- Opium poppy - depression of breathing, coma
- Peach (leaves, stems, seeds) – depression of breathing, convulsions, coma
- Peyote cactus
- Pokeweed
- Precatory bean - severe diarrhea, circulatory collapse
- Rosary pea (seeds) – after few days: painful mouth ulcers
- Rhododendron (leaves)
- Rhubarb in large quantities – burning mouth, vomiting, coma
- Tobacco (all parts) – vomiting, dizziness, collapse
- White (irish) potatoe unripe (green) tubers
NOTE. List contains only some common plants that are toxic in small amounts.
Chinese herbal drugs, like ‘An Gong Niu Huang Wan’ and ‘ Da Huo Luo Wan’ and Indian traditional medications Belleza-manning, Tainan, Ping-tong or Sin-chu may also cause diarrhea.
When to Visit a Doctor?
Doctor should be visited if the following symptoms appear after ingestion of a plant:
- Severe, prolonged or bloody diarrhea
- Repeating vomiting
- Strong, persistent stomach cramps
- Altered consciousness (hallucinations, coma)
