CHICAGO June 10—After federal health officials’ work to find the source of a multistate outbreak of food poisoning due to salmonella, Wal-Mart, McDonald’s and other U.S. chains have pulled over sales of some raw tomatoes.
Some other restaurants like Burger King, Taco Bell and Outback Steakhouse have also excluded tomatoes from their menus after federal recommendations of avoiding red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes no matter in what state and country they were grown.
On Monday, McDonald’s Spokesperson Danya Proud stated that McDonald’s Corp is no more serving its sandwiches with sliced tomatoes as a preventative measure till the recognition of the source of the food poisoning. She further told that the Oak Brook, III-based Company will keep serving grape tomatoes in salads as no problem has been associated with that kind.
It has not been identified which source of the tomatoes is a factor behind illnesses in 16 states.
According to the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention almost 145 people have been found infected with salmonella that have similar genetic fingerprints.Simlary,23 people were hospitalized without any reported death.
Federal officials stated that homegrown tomatoes, Cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes were not possibly the source of the salmonella related food poisoning.
The outbreak has also not been linked with raw Roma, red plum and round red tomatoes from California, Hawaii, North Carolina, South Carolina, Belgium, Canada, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands and Puerto Rico.
Salmonella bacterium grows in humans and animals ‘intestinal passage and usually salmonella transfer to humans by eating animal dung contaminated food.
Most of the salmonella infected people have to suffer diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. The illness last almost four to eight days.
According to FDA’s spokesperson Kimberly Rawlings, the agency is looking into the source of the epidemic.
