As most of the health experts suggest that children must do moderate exercise of one hour every day but according to a UK study, it may not prove enough to overcome the problem of childhood obesity.
The researchers noted that almost 42 percent of boys and only 11 percent of girls met govt. suggested exercise levels among those more than 200 British school going kids that were followed from age 5 to age 8.
However, even among these children, no positive effect was found regarding weight control with the passage of time, as the report that has been published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood suggests.
But it is not to suggest that exercise is not beneficial for children.
The researchers also found that the children who met govt.-suggested exercise levels had healthier numbers regarding blood pressure, cholesterol, insulin resistance and triglycerides than their less active age fellows.
According to lead researcher Dr. Brad S. Metcalf, of the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth “Children would be encouraged to have an active routine, as we found in our study that even without improving body mass index, higher activities help to boost good metabolic health.”
But, he further added, the findings also suggest that only physical activity can’t help to control the current problems in childhood obesity in countries like the US and UK.
The study was based on 212 children from 54 Plymouth Schools who were examined for four years. The physical activity levels of the children were recorded with small wearing monitors that were given to children once in a year.
The researchers also noted that there was a considerable difference in children’s spontaneous exercise levels as some used to spend 10 minutes a day while the others 90 minutes a day.
