skin1.jpgThe funny part of winters is that the external weather is chilling and wet and indoor we would feel pretty dry, it can be said as bony-dry conditions to be more precise. Moisture from the skin gets dried up or evaporated very fast leaving the skin dry and lifeless. It is though not a worrisome condition, but left untreated you have cuts and skin breakdowns all over and this welcome hoard of infections. It is also quite painful and burning when left untreated besides giving ugly appearance.

This skin dryness should be addressed as early as possible and there are umpteen products as lotions, creams and oils in the market that boast of treating the dry skin and sold under a special category called moisturizers. Skin specialists however, remark that the term moisturizer is more of a market name to promote a product and has not much scientific meaning attached. Dermatologists feel everyday care of skin is simple, however, the companies are cautious when it comes to claims of the products and they are not very transparent of the ingredients as well. Having said so, they try to be within the domain of FDA rules and regulations.

Funny thing is that the labels of these respective brands include lot of unnecessary terms from science and try to lure the customers. Although, different companies claim that their skincare products are allergy proof, as there are no specific standards or rules by governing bodies, the products escape no action even if there is any sporadic aberration from the companies’ claims. While a majority of skincare products intended to be moisturizers boast not to be causing any comedones or pimples. Another funny thing is that the moisturizing products boasts to be having a pile of vitamins and antioxidants, meaning all dumped into our skin! Yet the truth is that vitamins and the like in moisturizers are just useless as they lose their properties once they are exposed to oxygen or light.

No matter how much these products boast to contain extravagant ingredients etc, they certainly add moisture to skin when they are applied and they do have ingredients to retain moisture for some amount of time. So if you are not fussy about the oily thing, you can try the granny’s treatment to dry skin; applying petroleum jelly that is more popular as Vaseline. More and more research around moisturizers is happening to find a better ingredient than petroleum jelly to retain moisture on skin as well as add some extra frills such as feel or smell. So they do moisturize the skin with least doubt and one can safely use them for the intended purpose of moisturizing their skin.
