Washington- If women stop smoking when they are pregnant they are likely to have happy, more easygoing babies, British researchers said on Wednesday.

It was noted that babies of women who didn’t stop smoking while pregnant were significantly cranky. The researchers have the opinion that mothers, who can put in the effort to get away from the smoking habit, show more care for their offspring in other ways.

Babies

The researchers also found out that Babies born to non-smoking mothers are also more temperamental when compared to those born to mothers who quit. The researchers suggested that moms who discontinue the habit are doing something special.

It is known that tobacco affects the growth of fetus and also affects children when they inhale secondhand smoke of their mother.

Dr.Kate Pickett of the University of York, who led the study, feels her team is on to something more. The team has been tracking about 18,000 British babies (born between 2000 and 2002) and their mothers.

BabyThe mothers were asked a several questions regarding temperament of their babies. “There are aspects such as whether or not the mood of the child is cheerful, whether child is receptive to new things, whether they are afraid of unfamiliar persons or not “, Pickett said.

The team classified mothers as heavy or light smokers, non-smokers or quitters. The women who stopped smoking had markedly more easygoing babies, the team wrote in the study that was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

“The association is significant” Pickett said. “We think that it is a really difficult thing to quit smoking at any time. Moreover we know that the majority of women who stop smoking while they are pregnant begin to smoke again later,” she said.

“Accordingly what those women are doing is performing a really specific maternal action in order to avoid any harm to their babies. We are looking it as an indicator for other traits of women who are able to quit. It also can be an indicator for their trouble-free temperament.”

The researchers said that people who can stop smoking tobacco, which is considered as one of the highly addictive substances known, could transfer their genetic traits to their babies.

The study revealed that women who smoke heavily had the most problematic children, who scored low for positive mood. “I feel it’s very important not to stigmatize women who could not manage to stop smoking,” she said. “Moreover pregnancy is a stressful phase.”
