Pastries, Cheese, gras, foie and many other French culinary delights are full of dietetic sins. But now the children are getting more and more obese and the myth that French people can eat anything and maintain their body weight is fading. This is the reason the government is trying to fight back.
A new anti-fat idea, which suggests increase in taxes on extra-fatty, sugary and salty foods, is being presented to French officialdom.
According to an expert report, current taxes on different unhealthy considered food items are 5.5 percent and now these taxes are being increased up to 19.6 percent.
On Tuesday, The findings of this confidential and under discussion report were leaked to Les Echos newspaper.
It’s not clear yet that the increased taxes would apply to well-known fatty cheese that is purchased from outdoor markets or on just processed junk foods items that have nutritional content details on their packaging.
If these taxes are implemented, they would be utilized to patch a huge deficit in the state health care system in France.
The Budget Ministry official told that the findings would be presented to legislators during the next month.
The idea of increasing sales tax on fatty foods is facing opposition from Budget Minister Eric Woerth.
