A new study suggests that women who suffered a miscarriage may be at a higher risk of getting it again if they are obese.

The researchers from St Mary’s Hospital London observed the progress of 696 women who were categorized by the researchers as “unexplained miscarriages”

The researchers stated in a conference in Canada that in obese women the risk of getting miscarriage again was increased by 73%.

But according to some obesity specialists, it is dangerous to make efforts in pregnancy for losing weight.

The links between obesity and complications during pregnancy are quite well known, but the researchers claim that their study is the first to find out the regularities behind such miscarriages as have no obvious cause.

In these 696 subjects almost 30% were overweight, 15% were obese and more than half were of normal weight. The women with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above were considered as obese.

It was also noticed that the older women had the higher chances of having another miscarriage, but when the researchers adjusted the figures accordingly, they noticed obesity as another possible factor behind frequent miscarriages.

The researchers didn’t find any difference in the miscarriages rates for normal, overweight and underweight women. However’ the found that the risk in obese women increased sharply.

Winnie LO, who presented that study at the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology’s international meeting in Montreal, said: “The study shows that obese women who have recurrent miscarriages are at higher risk of further miscarriages.”
