After knowing that over-weight men have abnormal sperm and produce low amount of semen, the researchers believe that diet may serve as the latest low-tech fertility treatment.

The researchers presented their findings in a meeting at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, Spain. The recent research also showed that obese women were more likely to be sterile.

According to Dr. Ghiyath Shayeb of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland “It has been felt that male obesity might take part in problems related to fertility, especially after finding this risk factor convincing among women.”

In those 2,037 men who were attending Aberdeen Fertility Center, it was noticed that people with normal BMI (body mass index) tended to produce large amount of normal sperms and more semen than the men who were overweight or under weight.

Shayeb further adds “Many other studies also suggest a link between male obesity and higher levels of DNA damage in the sperm that can be linked with fertility problems as well”.

“There are least chances of any other factor’s involvement and our findings seem to suggest that men who want a baby with their partners must reduce their weight first” said, Shayeb.

Soon the conception rates between obese and normal men will also be compared by Shayeb’s team. In these tests they will notice if there is a correlation between poorer quality semen and decreased fertility.

“It is earlier to say something about this sort of relation but this is very important indeed and requires urgent attention” Shayeb says.
