Researchers from Edinburgh University say that use of perfumes or scented creams in pregnancy may increase the risk of developing infertility in unborn boys during their later life.

According to the researchers, eight to twelve weeks of pregnancy is quite crucial to determine reproductive problems in later life. The researchers believe that exposure to those chemicals (during pregnancy) that are found in cosmetics may affect sperm production in later life.

The researchers also told that it wasn’t a conclusive proof and further studies were needed to fully determine that risk.

Professor Richard Sharpe, who is director of the Medical Research Council’s Human Reproductive Sciences Unit in Edinburgh, led the study.

In their tests on rats, the researchers blocked the activity of androgens that include male sex hormones like testosterone.

The researchers found that the animals suffered fertility problems when the hormones are blocked.

Items like cosmetics, household fabrics and plastics have such chemicals as can block the activity of the hormones.

Prof Sharpe stated that: “These chemicals also increase the risk of developing other reproductive problems like testicular cancer in boys during later life.”

He further said that pregnant women should avoid applying such cosmetics products on their skin as could absorb in their bodies.  It is essential for these women to change their lifestyle after pregnancy as their little negligence may cause a terrible harm to their baby.
