As the sun is high in the sky and spring season sets on a milder weather, it is time to come out of winter hibernation for many people specially the young ones.
It is time when the sports grounds including basketball, baseball, tennis, and soccer start looking crowded. Children can bee seen dribbling down the driveways and shooting three pointers in the parks everywhere.
As the spring is springing, active sports season is springing as well and it becomes a busy period for foot and ankle surgeons. For them it is “Ankle Sprain Season”.
“Ankle Sprain” is one of the most common sports injuries. This injury ranks at the top among NCAA basketball players. It affects both men and women players equally. Getting injured with an ankle sprain is not only painful but also stops a person from performing many routine functions.
A person who gets injured with ankle sprain must be given immediate attention and proper medical treatment. It becomes really immaterial if the sprain is the first one or the fifth one, it needs equal attendance.
“Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation”, commonly known as the RICE, are types of most urgent treatments for ankle sprains. These help in reducing swelling and pain before the sprain is medically examined and treated by an expert foot and ankle surgeon. One must not take it lightly as the sprain may not be a simple sprain always. It may be also be an ankle fracture.
It is more common among the athletes having developed chronic ankle instability because they are repeatedly exposed to the risks of ankle sprains. This situation may cause their ankle to frequently “give away”. In many cases ankle surgery becomes inevitable.
It becomes important therefore that a proper rehabilitation of an ankle sprain is provided at the right time to the affected person so that the probability developing “chronic ankle sprain” could be reduced substantially.
The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) provides some of the useful tips for all players of all skills for reducing the risks of ankle sprain
- Always perform warm up stretching and exercising before you start playing sports. Warming up the body will set it in tune with the sports activity.
- One must wear always the right shoes for sports. There are befitting shoes verities available everywhere. When playing sports like basketball or tennis never wear a running shoes as it will create problems in side-to-side movements which are integral part of these games.
- One should preferably wear an ankle brace if recovering from a pre-existing injury or if one is prone to repeatedly sprained ankle.
ACFAS suggests that a little care would save a person from sufferings of not only ankle sprain but also from fractures, peroneal tendon injuries, and chronic ankle instability.
