It is the difference of using internal and external cues that makes huge difference between the health status of the Americans and the French.
French are habitual of using the internal cues and that is why they do not feel hungry for a longer time. It helps them stop eating more frequently. On the contrary, the Americans are dependent on external cues. Their plates must be neat and clean. The stock of beverages should never go out. Their favorite TV show should not be over. Americans generally need adverse conditions, just opposite to these, to stop eating more.
A recent study conducted by the Scientists at the ‘Cornell University’ has revealed that more weight is directly related to the external cues. A heavy person, either French or American, will rely more on such external cues for stop eating more. These people will never rely upon their feeling as full.
This new research involves an in depth analysis of data derived from the questionnaires from almost 133 people from Paris and almost 145 people from Chicago. Researchers explored the exact mode of making a decision about not eating anymore. Observing these people’s responses, the researchers derived their conclusions about what are the factors responsible for a situation when a person decides himself that he should not eat any more and must stop.
Findings of this research study are now scheduled to be published in the next issue of the journal “Obesity”. Scientists will also be presenting this study at the ‘Winter Marketing Educators Conference’ next month.
Increased dependence on the external cues to stop eating a meal will be a most probable explanation of the variance of the ‘Body Mass Index (BMI) among different people and different cultures. One of the lead researchers, Collin Payne is quite hopeful about this possibility of finding a part explanation even.
Collin Payne lays more stress upon conducting further extensions of researches on this same issue. According to him a follow up of smoking behavior and other socio-economic differences will also prove immensely helpful. . “Relying on internal cues for meal cessation, rather than on external cues, may improve eating patterns in the long term” says Collin Payne.
