“Wherever sunlight is available “HEM-SOLAR monitors” will allow health practitioners and individuals to take blood pressure readings. The development of this series further illustrates Omron’s commitment to environmental stewardship” says Keiichiro Akahoshi, representative director and CEO of Omron Healthcare Co., Ltd.
To release worldwide in spring 2009, HEM-SOLAR series, Solar-powered digital blood pressure monitors has developed by the ‘Omron Healthcare Co Ltd’, a subsidiary of ‘Omron Corporation’ and a leading manufacturer of medical, home healthcare and wellness products.
Two blood pressures monitor for the series i.e. a manual upper-arm and automatic upper-arm model has developed by the ‘Omron Healthcare’. Through the solar panel at the back of the product, exposing to the sunlight charges both. The manual model can take more than 100 readings while the automatic model can take 28 readings just four hours after direct exposure to sunlight. Manual model requires approximately 15 hours and 24 hours for the automatic model to get fully charged. The manual model can take measurements more than 280 times and the automatic model takes more than 100 times, when both of them are charged fully. Regardless of the closeness to an electric supply source the monitors facilitate easy readings wherever sunlight is available.
The characteristic of the products is the AES plastic material whish is an important component given to devices frequently exposed to sunlight and it is durable against UV light. To protect against exposure to precipitation, the devices also have embossed buttons on the front panel.
These products are aimed to release in spring 2009 by ‘Omron Healthcare’ and to improve the device quality with respect to the temperature and humidity they will continue the R&D efforts. To be recharged under a wider variety of conditions Omron will make the device more airtight.
‘HEM-SOLAR blood pressure monitors’ are environment friendly. To reduce waste and to emit less carbon dioxide by using solar energy, they use rechargeable batteries and not regular batteries. The amount of waste materials that can be reduced is 80 batteries with the manual model and 400 batteries with the automatic model because of the product’s lifespan of 30,000 uses.
For some time the ‘Omron Healthcare’ has proactively been working on developing environmental friendly products. Even though RoHS does not regulate blood pressure monitors the Omron Healthcare started responding to RoHS, a European regulation for use of harmful materials and applying it 99% of its products in 2004.The Company will respond 100% to RoHS guidelines on blood pressure monitors in the near future. Through the creation of products such as the HEM-SOLAR series the company will spread worldwide its approach as an environmental friendly company.
The AES plastic resin is Acrylonitrile/ Ethylene-propylene-diene/ Styrene plastic-resin plastic that have higher durability in different climates. Similarly, the RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances) are the hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, calcium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in all products from automobiles to consumer electronics are intended to eliminate by the European legislation.
