When the lower jaw acquires a square shape, a person starts looking older. As we grow the lower jaw grows too. This continued growth of the lower jaw starts creating a square shape of jaw line in a slow process. At a certain stage this shape completely turns to almost a square and we start looking older.
A recently concluded research establishes that looking older has no relationship with the wrinkles, sagging skin, and droopy eyelids. “The shape of the lower jaw plays an important role in the perception of youth and can be a tell-tale sign of someone’s age“, said Joel Pessa.
Joel Pessa, the lead researcher conducted this study that has been published in the January 2007 issue of “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery”, the official medical journal of the’ American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)’.
A younger looking appearance varies from one culture to another. Human races hailing from different parts of the world have different shapes of jaw line in humans. When it was analyzed by the researchers, it was revealed that the smaller and more curved jaw line of a man or woman would be making them look younger. This curvature of the jaw line will take longer time in attaining a square shape and thus people with this characteristics will look older in much later stage of age compared to the people have less curvature jaw line.
Similarly, the researchers also observed that the small size of the jaw is also a determinant in the curvature of the jaw line. A big sized jaw would possibly have less curvature and therefore, such jaw line would make a person look older at much early stage of life.
Researchers obtained these results by studying the radiographic images of sixteen patients divided equally among men and women with the youth mean age group of 16 years and maturity mean age of 56 years.
All these sixteen patients, men and women, demonstrated a continued growth of the lower jaw with age and this turned in to a square shaped jaw line in the end.
The study also highlights that the soft tissue procedures including the ‘facelift procedure’ may be helpful in creating an illusion of a smaller and high curvature lower jaw line up to some extent. This could be a possible artificial, temporary, and better option for more youthful appearance.
