Most nose problems will present with one or more of the following signs and symptoms : Blocked nose Runny Nose / Nasal discharge (rhinorrhea) Sneezing Impaired sense of smell – complete (anosmia) or partial (hyposmia) Unpleasant smell (cacosmia) Pain Nosebleed (epistaxis) Cough Growths like a nasal polyp Damage and deformity of the nasal structures resulting in perforation of the septum or nasal deformity Causes and Symptoms of Nose Problems Blocked Nose Most of the causes of a blocked nose are due to nasal congestion by mucus as a result of nasal inflammation. This is often a result of upper respiratory tract infections, more frequently caused by viruses. Allergic rhinitis is another common cause of a blocked nose when the hypersensitive nasal lining produces excessive amounts of mucus (hypersecretion). Any slight irritation can cause significant discomfort. When we feel a bump inside our nose or soreness at just one spot, we often refer to it as a sore in the nose. However, a sore is not an accurate description of the problem. These sores could be a polyp, scab, cyst, ulcer,abscess or sometimes even tumors. How do sores form in the nose? The inner lining of the nasal cavity (mucosa) is similar to the lining throughout the airways although the thick nasal hairs are not seen beyond the nose. This mucosa is very sensitive and can be easily injured. Infections, abnormal growths and a build up of pus and other fluids can also occur in or on this lining. Depending on the type of lesion, the sore may form in a different way. Inflammation is one of the more common causes of sores. It is the body’s mechanism to prevent tissue damage. A nose bleed (nosebleed) is the presence of blood exiting from the nose on its own or in nasal mucus secretions. The medical term for bleeding from the nose is epistaxis. Often referred to as a ‘bloody nose’, nose bleeds can vary from a few spots of blood when wiping the nose, profuse bleeding through the nasal passages or sneezing blood stained mucus. A bleeding nose is often a cause for concern as the sight of blood can be quite disturbing especially when it occurs for no known reasons. A bloody nose is usually associated with sudden trauma to the nose and face, as in banging the nose on to an object or assault to the face, but nose bleeds may occur as a secondary symptom of other underlying conditions. The most common causes of a bloody nose are trauma, usually due to nose picking or nose blowing due to a runny nose and sneezing, and it also occurs as a result of dry, cold weather.
