The female breasts, or mammary glands, are the modified appendages lying on the anterior chest wall. It is present in males as well but in most men, it is not as prominent as it is in females. The female breast has a role in both nourishing the offspring as well as offering immunological protection to the newborn baby. To some degree, the breast also has a psychological function in that it is associated with sexuality. Underdeveloped breasts or partial or complete removal, which may be necessary to treat certain diseases like breast cancer, may cause significant emotional distress. Function of the Breasts The breast produces milk which serves to nourish the infant. It provides complete nutrition for the newborn baby and contains carbohydrate (lactose), fats and proteins as well as micronutrients. In the first few days after delivery (as well as the first few days before), the breast secretes colostrum which is similar in composition to breast milk except that it has very little fat. Apart from nutrition, the breast secretions also ensures that the newborn has a significant amount of immunological protection. This is in the form of maternal antibodies, chemical mediators, vitamins and enzymes. These immune components augments [...]

Nipple discharge affects many women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and the presence of breast secretions do not always indicate any serious problem. While breast milk is expected in pregnancy and after child birth, other secretions from the breast may also occur in women of any age. Young women may experience nipple discharge without any cause for concern but persistent discharge in older women may be a sign of an underlying condition. Secretions from the breast usually occur from the nipple and nipple discharge should be differentiated from fluids secreted through a breast fistula. A breast or mammary duct fistula is an abnormal passage that forms between a mammary duct in the breast to the surface of the skin, usually near the areola. While a mammary fistula is not very common, it may occur after a prolonged infection and the presence of a fistula should not be considered as nipple discharge. A breast fistula requires further investigation and appropriate treatment. Types of Nipple Discharge There are different types of nipple discharge and the type of breast secretion may be an indication of the cause of the discharge. Milky discharge may be breast milk production even in women who are not pregnant [...]

The size of breasts varies among individuals and even during the course of life for a host of reasons. Unlike other appendages, the breast probably undergoes the greatest degree of changes in size and shape over years and decades. It happens in both males and females. However, it is more obvious in women who naturally have significantly larger breasts than males. For most women, the concern is when the breast size changes significantly within a short period of time – like weeks and months. While there may be physiological reasons for this change that is nothing to worry about, there are also instances where these changes are due to pathological reason (diseases and disorders). What Affects Breast Size? It is important to know the basics of female breast anatomy in order to understand how breast size varies. The size of females breasts are determined by a host of factors, including: Age Hormones Body fat Pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding Genes These are just some of the main factors. It is important to remember that certain medication, prior breast surgery, ongoing breast support (with a brassiere) and other factors can also influence breast size over a short period or lifelong. Sagging of [...]
