What is seborrheic dermatitis? Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that tends to occur on the oily areas of the body, most noticeably on the face, scalp and chest. The rash usually appears as scaly skin with greasiness and yellow crusting that flakes off to reveal underlying redness and a flat or slightly raised plaque. Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic condition that occurs for unknown reasons. There seems to be a link with abnormal immune responses and a certain type of yeast (fungus) that normally dwells on human skin. When it occurs on the scalp, it is commonly referred to as dandruff. However, the term dandruff may also be used to describe similar scalp conditions that differs in the disease mechanism and appearance to some extent. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect newborn babies and the scalp presentation is usually referred to as cradle cap. It may also cause severe diaper rash. Meaning of Seborrheic Dermatitis The term seborrheic dermatitis means inflamed skin (dermatitis) with excessive sebum or skin oil (seborrhea). However, the sebum production may not always be excessive. The sebaceous glands produce an oily substance known as sebum. Some areas of the body have more sebum than others, [...]

Dandruff is a common scalp problem that affects children, adolescents and adults. It can persist for years but it is treatable. Dandruff has become a common term to describe many different types of scalp conditions where white specks are seen on the scalp, hair, forehead and shoulders. However, there may be different causes and each has to be treated in specific ways. Not all cases of dandruff respond well to treatment and it is important to adopt multiple approaches to manage and prevent dandruff. What Causes Dandruff? Dandruff is a problem with the scalp (skin) and not the hair. The specks that are visible on the hair emanate from the scalp. Dead skin cells from the scalp are constantly shed as with skin on any part of the body. Normally you do not see these surface skin cells that are lost on a constant basis. However, when large clumps are shed then it may be evident as yellowish-white specks which most people refer to as dandruff. Dry skin on the scalp is one of the most common causes of dandruff. Poor hygiene is another problem as the dead skin and natural oils are not washed off regularly. Irritation and allergy [...]

Itching of the forehead skin, like elsewhere on the body, is mainly due to irritation, damage or disease in the affected area. It is a common problem for most people but usually an itchy forehead is a transient symptom. The itching occurs suddenly and resolves quickly with a little scratching or rubbing. However, there are instances where the itching persists and worsens over time. It may also be accompanied by a rash on the forehead or occur without any rash. Causes of Itchy Forehead There are many skin conditions that may present with itching, with or without a forehead rash. Itching on its own without other symptoms is often difficult to diagnose. The skin is dry, cracked, red and itchy. Another allergy-related condition is allergic contact dermatitis. It occurs when certain harmless substances (allergens) make contact with the skin.
