Definition Perioral dermatitis is a reddish skin rash around the mouth that presents with small pimples, tiny blisters and sometimes dry scaly skin. It closely resembles rosacea but is primarily isolated to the area around the mouth. The pimples are not due to acne vulgaris despite the similarity in presentation. Perioral dermatitis is a chronic skin condition that is mainly seen in women and sometimes in children. Although the cause of perioral dermatitis is unknown, it appears to be mainly linked to the use of topical corticosteroids. It does not usually affect the lips and rarely extends to the rest of the face. The inner part of the mouth is also not affected. Incidence Perioral dermatitis affects about 1% of the population and 9 out of 10 patients are women. The more commonly affected age group is within 20 to 45 years. Both the gender and age predilection may be due to the wider use of cosmetics in this group. However, there is an increasing incidence among men these days, possibly due to the more widely accepted use of skin care applications among males. Pathophysiology The mechanism behind perioral dermatitis is not well understood. It appears to be inflammatory in [...]

Eczema is a broad term that is used to describe a range of different skin conditions. Most types are chronic. It either persists for years or recurs every now and then. Even milder forms of eczema tends to last for at least several months. Eczema should be treated with medication prescribed by a doctor. But there are a number of things that you can do to relieve or improve the condition. Some factors trigger it and others worsen eczema. The cornerstone of managing eczema is to avoid these factors or at least minimize exposure to it. In most cases we know eczema to mean atopic dermatitis, the skin condition that tends to start from childhood and it often associated with hay fever and asthma. It is a result of immune dysfunction where a person becomes overly sensitive to otherwise harmless substances. It is not uncommon for people to refer to irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, fungal infections of the skin (ringworm) and urticaria (hives) as eczema. All of these conditions may be different in nature but have common skin symptoms to atopic dermatitis. Moisturize Skin Regularly Your skin is unable to retain its normal moisture if you have eczema.

Eczema is an skin condition marked by dry skin rashes which are often itchy. The itching can fluctuate during the course of the day and vary in intensity in each case. Itching is one of the more unpleasant symptoms that proves frustrating to patients. Attempting to scratch the itchy area may in fact worsen the eczema overall and even lead to complications such as secondary bacterial infections. Constant itching can also disturb sleep, affect the ability to concentrate on daily activities and lead to irritability and even depression. Most palliative treatment options for eczema are aimed at reducing skin itching. But it is not just about using oral and topical medication to ease the itching and reduce skin dryness. There are a number of different conservative measures to relieve eczema and live with the condition. It may not resolve eczema but it can make the condition more tolerable.

The skin over the abdomen can be just as prone to various skin rashes as skin anywhere else on the body. Some rashes may be acute where it arises suddenly, may be intense but lasts only for a short period of time. Other skin rashes may be chronic where it recurs or persists for long periods of time, from weeks to months and even years. Usually when a rash is restricted to only one part of the body then the causative factor or trigger is specific to this region. However, an abdominal rash may occur as part of a more widespread rash affecting other parts of the body. Skin Rash and Other Symptoms A skin rash may refer to dry, red, swollen, cracked or peeling skin. There may also be other lesions like vesicles or pustules, ulcers and discharges such as pus or blood. Often it is accompanied by other symptoms such as itching and there may also be pain or tenderness at the site. A skin rash is only a sign of some underlying disorder. Depending on the cause there may also be other symptoms like fever. Causes of Abdominal Rash Most of the common causes of an abdominal [...]

What is irritant contact dermatitis? Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is inflammation of the skin that arises with exposure to certain substances. It must be differentiated from allergic contact dermatitis where the skin inflammation develops due to an allergy to certain substances. Dermatitis is a term for skin inflammation that typically presents with a skin rash (redness, swelling, dryness, peeling or scaling skin). There are many different types of dermatitis. Contact dermatitis arises when certain skin irritants or allergenic substances makes contact with the skin thereby giving rise to irritant or allergic contact dermatitis respectively. Irritant contact dermatitis is known by many common names such as sensitive skin, chemical rash, dishpan hands or housewives’ eczema. The latter two terms are in reference to exposure to soaps and detergents which are more common among dishwashers and home executives. However, many of these common terms are also used to describe related skin diseases. Another term that also frequently used is hand dermatitis since irritant contact dermatitis more frequently affects the skin of the hands and fingers. It is not a specific predilection for this part of the body but rather as a consequence of the hands being in touch with various substances which [...]

What is eczema? Eczema refers to any skin inflammation and irritation where the skin becomes dry, rough to touch and usually red and peeling. The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis often seen in babies and young children with allergies. The term eczema is widely used to describe a number of skin rashes. It is synonymous with the term “dermatitis” (eczematous dermatitis) which refers to various inflammatory conditions of the skin and can be acute or chronic. Eczema is often thought of only as atopic dermatitis, a skin condition commonly affecting infants and children due to immune-mediated hypersensitivity. Eczema, and even atopic dermatitis, can affect any group including adults and the elderly . The characteristic feature of eczema is persistent itching, which exacerbates and is intolerable in acute aggravations. How does eczema start? There are a range of possible causes of eczema. Sometimes there is genetic susceptibility meaning that the genes that are inherited makes a person sensitive to certain irritants. The immune system may be hypersensitive and manifest on the skin or an irritant disturbs the normal skin function and health. The underlying feature in most cases, however, is the influence of the immune cells and chemicals. [...]

As with skin anywhere on the body, itching of the cheeks is not uncommon. In fact the cheeks are more likely to itch for various reasons that tends to affect the face to a greater extent than other parts of the body. Itching of the cheeks is usually a minor problem but can sometimes be linked to serious skin conditions. For most people there is greater concern when any skin symptoms involve the face as it can be unsightly or may affect a person’s self esteem. Therefore itchy cheeks should be investigated by a doctor if the condition persists, gets worse over time or is accompanied by a rash. Why do the cheeks itch? Itch receptors are specialized receptors in the skin. These receptors may be stimulated by a host of different factors. Itching is a sensation that usually indicates a potential threat or minor injury to the body surface. It triggers a person to rub or scratch the affected area. The scratching action may be useful to remove any imminent threat or irritant on the skin surface. However, itching can be a prominent symptom in some skin diseases. Scratching in these skin diseases do not resolve the itching and [...]

A. Environmental Causes of Itchy Skin 1. Dry Skin Dry skin (xerosis, winter itch) is common, especially in old people, and may be caused by cold weather, wind, sunburns, prolonged water exposure, frequent hot baths and using soaps (also washing powder and household cleansers) that can thin the protective oil layer on the skin and thus enable losing water through the skin. 2. Sweating Microbes from a normal skin flora break down the sweat (especially in the armpits and groin) and yield substances that cause itch. Excessive sweatingcan be observed in persons with primary hyperhidrosis (increased activity of sympathetic nerves, possibly caused by psychological reasons), or secondary hyperhidrosis (in elevated levels of thyroxine, in tuberculosis or malignancies). 3. Insect Bites Insects (mosquitoes, flies, tics, bees, wasps, ants, spiders, scorpions) bites may cause a minor localized itchy and/or painful skin infection that usually heals on its own in several hours or few days. Some insect bites, especially bees may cause severe allergic reactions with generalized skin itch and swelling. 4. Infections and Infestations Fungi (e.g. Candida albicans) thrive well on the feet and in moist body folds (the groin, under the breasts). Dandruff (scalp skin shedding and itching) is also caused by fungi. [...]
