Diarrhea is one of those common symptoms that we all experience at some time or the other. Most of the time it is acute meaning that it lasts for only a short period of time before the bowel habit gradually returns to normal. No treatment is required in the majority of cases but supportive measures like adequate hydration are important. However, one of the biggest problems with getting over diarrhea is that most people rely on “old wives’ tales” about the right way to manage it rather than proper medical facts. One of the major hurdles in this regard is what to eat or not eat when you have diarrhea. Home Treatment for Diarrhea Diarrhea is one of the acute symptoms that can often be managed at home. If in doubt however, then seek professional medical treatment. The key to treating diarrhea at home is to let your body overcome the disturbance that has disrupted normal bowel habit. But in the process, provide support for your body with enough fluid and nutrients. Water alone will not do. You need a proper oral rehydrating solution which can be purchased in sachet form from most drug stores and supermarkets. Resting is equally [...]

LindsayK72 Asked : I am 37 and slightly overweight. Recently I tried a quick diet that my friend used with success – it is similar to the lemon detox diet but you also use mega doses of vitamins and a water tablet during this time. It was a combination detox and weight loss program which lasts for 14 days and it did help me lose a few inches. I could drink as much water with lemon in it, have two small meals of fresh fruits and raw vegetables (or a smoothie) and took vitamin and fiber tablets after each meal. The water tablet was only used once a day in the morning. In the last 3 or 4 days of the diet, I started noticing a lot of gas. I was passing out gas from both ends but there was no bloating or anything else. After I finished the diet and started eating again, I had diarrhea. I was told that this does sometimes happen as you get back onto solid foods. It’s now been 6 days and the diarrhea has not stopped. I mainly have diarrhea after eating and the gas does not stop, it’s there all the time [...]

Most of us do not consider any link between eating and diarrhea unless we have a common diarrheal illness like the stomach flu (viral gastroenteritis). Howevever, for some people diarrhea after eating can be an almost daily occurrence. There are several possible reasons for this eating and diarrhea link. Some of these causes may be acute while others can be chronic. It is important to understand some of the basics of how food travels from the mouth to the anus. Contrary to what may people may think, the food that has just been eaten is not the stool that is passed out if there is diarrhea immediately after eating. Even when the gut is irritated and the movement of food and waste through the bowels is faster than normal, it can still take several hours for food that is eaten to reach the rectum. Time for Food to Exit the Bowels The time it takes for food to travel from the mouth, be digested and passed out as a waste (feces) is known as the bowel transit time. This can vary from person to person but it is within 12 to 48 hours. It can be, however, take as long [...]

Diarrhea is usually not time-specific in that it does not typically occur at some times of the day and not at others. However, some people may find that diarrheal stool is more likely to occur with eating certain foods or specific activities which may then cause the diarrhea to occur at those times. Diarrhea at night should be investigated for all the possible causes of diarrhea, irrespective of the fact that it is occurring more frequently at nighttime. What is nocturnal diarrhea? Nocturnal diarrhea refers to loose, watery and frequent stool that occurs at night. This is a feature that is present in a few gastrointestinal illnesses but is more often caused by diet, lifestyle, medication and psychological factors. Nocturnal diarrhea may affect sleep patterns when a person has to awaken from sleep in order to have a bowel movement. This disturbed sleep can sometimes aggravate diarrhea, especially in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Of the different types of diarrhea (osmotic, secretory, exudative), nocturnal diarrhea is more often seen with secretory diarrhea. Normally water is pumped into the small intestine to facilitate digestion and absorption of nutrients. This water is later reabsorbed in the colon. However, in secretory diarrhea [...]

Most of us may expect some indigestion after a heavy meal but for some people there is the need to have a bowel movement after eating. This may occur immediately after eating or a short while thereafter. In some cases where this the urging to pass stool occurs with every meal and after eating any time of food, it has to be considered as a symptom of some underlying problem. It is not entirely uncommon to have a bowel movement after eating. If a person has not a bowel movement at their usual time then there are several reasons why a meal can trigger the urge to pass stool. This is not considered to be abnormal or a symptom of some disease. In fact even if a person did have a regular bowel movement, there is still the possibility of a meal triggering a bowel movement particularly if a person overeats. Read more on diarrhea with overeating. Why the need to have a bowel movement after a meal? A bowel movement is a result of the colon being stretched with stool. This stretching triggers strong contractions and stool is pushed into the rectum. The urging to pass stool becomes stronger [...]
