CHICAGO June 10—After federal health officials’ work to find the source of a multistate outbreak of food poisoning due to salmonella, Wal-Mart, McDonald’s and other U.S. chains have pulled over sales of some raw tomatoes.
Some other restaurants like Burger King, Taco Bell and Outback Steakhouse have also excluded tomatoes from their menus after federal recommendations of avoiding red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes no matter in what state and country they were grown.
On Monday, McDonald’s Spokesperson Danya Proud stated that McDonald’s Corp is no more serving its sandwiches with sliced tomatoes as a preventative measure till the recognition of the source of the food poisoning. She further told that the Oak Brook, III-based Company will keep serving grape tomatoes in salads as no problem has been associated with that kind.
It has not been identified which source of the tomatoes is a factor behind illnesses in 16 states.
