Pancreatic Trauma Definition The term pancreatic trauma refers to injury of the pancreas, the elongated gland that sits in the upper middle quadrant of the abdomen. This can occur with blunt force trauma or sharp penetrating injuries. The pancreas is among the more commonly injured organ as it has very limited protection from the ribcage and is therefore quite exposed in the abdomen. A car accident injury or assault are two of the most common causes of pancreatic trauma. It is difficult to identify pancreatic trauma when it is very minor. Treatment in these cases of minimal injury is much easier. However, with moderate the severe trauma, it is very difficult to treat and manage the injured pancreas. Pancreatic Trauma Effects Normal Functioning Pancreas There are many reasons why injury to the pancreas can be very serious and even life threatening in some instances. The pancreas is both an endocrine and exocrine gland. Its endocrine hormones like insulin enter the bloodstream directly where it helps to, among other activities, control the blood glucose levels. The pancreatic gland’s exocrine functions are to release digestive enzymes into ducts that then empty into the duodenum of the small intestine. These powerful digestive enzymes [...]

Pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer are two different conditions that affect the pancreas. One type of pancreatitis known as chronic pancreatitis can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. Despite the similarity of symptoms in both pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer it is important to understand how these two conditions differ. One is an inflammatory condition and the other is due to an abnormality in the cells of the pancreas. The pancreas is an important gland located in the upper abdomen. It is a large gland that has multiple functions. Firstly, the pancreas secretes hormones into the bloodstream. This is known as the endocrine functions of the pancreas. Hormones like insulin and glucagon are produced and secreted by the pancreas. Digestive enzymes are also produced and secreted by the pancreas. This is known as the exocrine functions of the pancreas. These enzymes are stored in the inactive form and activated only when needed. It is secreted into the duodenum of the small intestine where it assists with the digestion of food. The pancreas is surrounded by he liver, gallbladder, stomach and duodenum. Conditions affecting these organs may involve the pancreas and similarly conditions of the pancreas can sometimes affect these other organs. Difference [...]

Every year approximately 200,000 Americans are admitted to a hospital with pancreatitis. This condition of the pancreas is seen throughout the world but is more prevalent in the United States and Finland than in other countries. In the United States, acute pancreatitis is largely associated with alcohol consumption. Death occurs in approximately 10% to 15% of acute pancreatitis cases. What Happens in Pancreatitis? The pancreas is a large and important gland located in the upper abdomen. Most of us know the pancreas because of one hormone that it secretes – insulin. This hormone, insulin, is responsible for lowering blood glucose levels. It is also the problem in diabetes, which has become a very common condition throughout the globe. Insulin is either deficient (type 1 diabetes) or the body becomes unresponsive to insulin (type 2 diabetes). However, the pancreas also secretes other hormones as well as a range of digestive enzymes. These powerful enzymes are produced and stored in the pancreas until it has to be released during digestion. In order to prevent these enzymes from digesting the tissue of the pancreas, there are mechanisms that keep these enzymes inactive while it is in the pancreas. In pancreatitis, these mechanisms fail [...]
