An itchy rash can occur on the body and this can be due to the same conditions. However, certain conditions are more likely to arise on specific parts of the body. This may be due to local factors, like contact with fabrics or jewelry, or with spread from neighboring areas. An itchy rash on the neck may therefore be due to skin conditions that can affect any part of the skin on the body or with conditions that are specifically or more likely to affect the skin on the neck. Itching of the groin is as common as itching anywhere on or itching throughout the body. For most of us it is an occasional itch that quickly subsides and is not a persistent problem. An itchy groin is often more distressing than itching elsewhere on the body largely due to social component of it being unacceptable to scratch or touch the groin in public. However, many of the same causes of itching at other sites of the body are also responsible for an itchy groin except for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) which are often isolated to the groin area. Why does the groin itch? Firstly it is important to understand the area that the word ‘groin’ refers to a specific area. The groin is actually the crease between the torso and thighs on either side of the genitals. However, most people refer to the groin as the entire lower pubic area, including the crease, genitals and upper parts of the thigh. Since the hand makes contact with the environment throughout the day, is repeatedly washed and comes into contact with others, it faces repeated insults which can result in a rash. What is a Rash? Most of us consider a rash to be any abnormal change in skin color or texture. These changes may be due to a host of disturbances in the normal anatomy and even physiology of the skin. It can be due to inflammatory processes where the area is swollen, red, painful and feels hot to touch. Alternatively there may be excessive or reduced secretion of skin oils (sebum) and sweat. Destruction of skin, as is seen with an infection, scaling and oozing are some of the other disturbances that are collectively and sometimes incorrectly referred to as a rash. What is an Itch? Itching is a sensation that provokes a desire to scratch. It is not the same as pain or burning, although all of these sensations may be triggered by inflammation and similar chemicals like histamine. Itching is the body’s way of signalling that there is an irritant or potential threat on the skin surface. Specialized receptors are stimulated and this compels a person to scratch the area, thereby removing the irritant or threat. Keratosis Pilaris (Chicken Skin) Keratosis pilaris is a benign skin condition with small bumps (goose bumps, chicken skin) appearing on the upper arms or other parts of the body (1). Sheded skin cells, instead of falling off, build up in the hair follicles and plug them, thus causing skin bumps. Condition is hereditary and pretty common. It may appear in babies, usually becomes apparent in adolescents, and tends to cease with age. It may be associated with a dry skin, ingrown hair, or rarely, atopic dermatitis.
