Middle-aged people are generally less active and more overweight compared to any other age group. This increases the level of inactivity in these people.
Gavin Turrell, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Queensland University of Technology conducted a research study to establish the fact with evidences. This research study aims to find out why the baby boomers are comparatively less physically active.
“Inactivity is one of the main reasons why two-thirds of men and over one half of women in the 45 to 64 age group are overweight or obese,” said Gavin Turrell.

Moderate to High Physical Activity and Alcohol Intake Helps lowering Risks of Heart Diseases
Physically active and moderately alcohol drinkers have minimal risks for dying of heart diseases and other related problems. A recently concluded research study found this to be more probable than in case of people who do not drink at all. The research findings indicate that people who are neither drinking nor physically active bear 30% to 49% more such risks.
Findings of this research have been published in the “European Heart Journal “on January 9, 2008.It is for the first time that a research aims to define the combined effects of leisure-time physical activity and weekly alcohol consumption upon the risk of fatal ischaemic heart disease, a form of heart disease characterized by a reduced blood supply to the heart, and other related reasons. Professor Morten Grønbæk, Director of Research of the National Institute of Public Health at the University of Southern Denmark in Copenhagen, and Professor Berit Heitmann, Director for Research of the Institute of Preventive Medicine at Copenhagen University Hospitals, jointly monitored this research.
Green Salad and Gardening Activities Reduce lung Cancer Risks in Current, Former and Never Smokers
People who are taking at least four servings of green salad every week and undertaking gardening once or twice a week have a reduced risk for developing lung cancer, regardless of whether or not they are smokers.
Dr. Michele Forman and his colleague research team presented the findings of this research study in the recently held ‘American Association for Cancer Research’s Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research conference’ in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, Dr.Michele Forman and colleagues from the ‘MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas’, examined data from an ongoing case-control study to develop separate epidemiologic risk assessment models for lung cancer in current, former, and never smokers.
Potential risk factors causing lung cancer included exposure to second-hand smoke and to dust; a cancer related family history, a history of respiratory disease in the index patient, and history of smoking. This model however revolves around certain limitations demonstrating modest discriminatory power.
