Peptic ulcer disease is a common problem of the stomach and duodenum (first part of the small intestine). It is estimated that at least 10% of the American population has a duodenal ulcer, the most common type of peptic ulcer, at any one time. One of the complications of a peptic ulcer is that it may bleed. As a result there can be slow blood loss which may lead to anemia, or there may be massive blood loss with severe complications in the short term. Reason for Bleeding of a Peptic Ulcer A peptic ulcer is an open sore that forms in the lining of the stomach or duodenum of the small intestine. Duodenal ulcers are more common. Although it is an open sore, peptic ulcers do not always bleed. However, if the peptic ulcer is repeatedly irritated then this can cause further damage and result in a bleeding peptic ulcer. Read more on what is a peptic ulcer. Normally the stomach has a mucus barrier which prevents the stomach acid from making contact with the stomach wall. Similarly the duodenum can quickly respond to stomach juices and neutralize it. These mechanisms ensure that the stomach and duodenum are not [...]

Normal stool (bowel movement) color is tan to brown. Sometimes it can be slightly lighter or darker depending on foods and beverages that were recently consumed as well as medication, supplements and even the speed of movement through the gut. However, there are instances when bowel movement color can be considered to be abnormal. Black stool is therefore one such case of abnormal bowel movement color. CAUSES OF BLACK BOWEL MOVEMENT The causes of black bowel movement can be divided into dietary, physiologic and pathologic causes. Dietary refers to food and beverages that may alter the color of the stool. Physiologic includes the causes of black bowel movement that are not considered to be a disease but rather a disturbance in the normal processes within the body that contributes to bowel movement color. Pathologic causes refers to diseases that leads to black bowel movement. It is important to note that black bowel movement like any abnormality of stool color is a clinical sign of some underlying problem and not a condition on its own. When black stool is noticed, it is also important to take note of the shape, form and texture of stool as well as any change in [...]

Stomach ulcers are a common digestive problem and can cause significant discomfort. Sometimes these ulcers, which are open sores, may bleed. This can continue intermittently for weeks and even months. However, in some cases it can arise suddenly and be severe. As with any blood loss, this can be dangerous. For high risk patients like the elderly it can even lead to death if there is extensive blood loss without medical treatment. How To Spot Bleeding Stomach Ulcers It is important to understand a few facts about peptic ulcers and bleeding from the upper gut. Firstly peptic ulcers refers to stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers (located in the small intestine). Between the two, duodenal ulcers are more common. A bleeding peptic ulcer is only one possible cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, albeit the most common. Sometimes the signs and symptoms of an upper gastrointestinal bleed, like a bleeding ulcer, is overt and therefore obvious. It may be seen as fresh red blood in the vomit or similar to dark coffee grounds in the vomit. At other times the bleed [...]
