A recent study conducted at U-M Cardio protection emphasizes the anti-inflammatory properties of tart cherries, which is better known as the “Red Hot Super Fruit”.The study released by the researchers at ‘University of Michigan’ today at the ‘Experimental Biology Annual Meeting’, shared the possibility of curing the inflammation with the help of the Tart Cherries.
As revealed by the recent studies, Inflammation usually occurs as a result of body’s natural mechanism against any kind of injury or infection however, it cannot be ignored that its chronic state may lead the person prone to various other chronic diseases.
The new study says that the tart cherries may decrease inflammation and even help reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart related diseases in animals. This could be seen as a useful addition to look at the role of diet in managing disease and preventing it.The study was done on two groups of rats, one group comprising of rats carrying metabolic syndrome symptoms of which are obesity and pre-diabetic and second group of slender and healthy rats. Both these groups were fed a diet designed on western pattern, rich in fats and carbohydrates and 1 percent of whole tart cherry powder. It was seen that it reduced the symptoms of inflammation,TNF-alpha and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in both the at-risk rats and the lean rats to a large extent. They also showed decrease in the cholesterol and triglyceride levels which are major causative factors of cardiovascular diseases. It even cut on the abdominal fat and total fat mass, reducing the risk of other diseases commonly attached with excess abdominal fat.
Dr. Steven F. Bolling, the co-author of the study who also heads the laboratory, where the study was conducted, sees this study as an attempt to learn how inflammation could be better controlled. This study is also marked by him as a major breakthrough in improving the general health and also reducing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, two most important epidemics which have been impacting the nation’s health in recent times.
Dr. Bolling believes that the study helped in establishing a direct link between foods rich in antioxidants such as cherries and potential reduction in inflammation and disease risks.
Tart cherries which are bright red coloured fruits are commonly sold in dried, frozen or in juice form. They are rich sources of anthocyanins, one of the powerful antioxidants and also responsible for lending this rich red colour to the fruit. Researchers are assuming that this may be the cause of their giving the anti-inflammatory properties to the tart cherries and other health benefits.
This new study has been perceived as a new direction towards incoming researches to be conducted among the human beings to find more beneficial connection between bringing changes in our dietary intake, controlling inflammation and reducing the risk of other diseases.
