A rise in the ‘teen birth rate’ for the first time since 1991, illustrated the utter failure of the ‘contraceptive based sex education’.
The “Family research Council (FRC)” made this declaration recently reacting over the announcement by the ‘Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’. FRC expressed its serious concern on this issue and called for a focus on authentic abstinence education as the best form of prevention for the youth.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins expressed his worries and stated that the so-called comprehensive protective effect of condoms promotes unsafe behavior. This results in an increase in STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) rates in young people, and an increase in out-of-wedlock teenage pregnancies.
Tony Perkins said,” What we’re really witnessing are the effects of contraceptive-focused sex education, often labeled as comprehensive sex education”. Tony Perkins further comments, “When people talk about ‘abstinence until marriage,’ both parts are important”.
An authentic abstinence-until-marriage education focuses on a risk avoidance strategy rather than mere risk reduction. This concept if imbibed in to the cultural and family values along with the education system would help youth avoid sexual activity, build character and develop healthy relationships.
Contrary to this approach that focuses on the ‘physical-health-only approach’ of ‘contraceptive-based education’, ‘abstinence-until-marriage education’ promotes a holistic health prevention message that addresses mental, emotional, and physical health in a mutually reinforcing way.
The report of the ‘Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’ also pointed towards the increase in births in case of unmarried women. The birth-rate in such cases touched a new U.S. record with 38.5% of all births.
Several of the studies conducted before have enough evidence to support the view that the children who are born to married parents have significant and enduring advantages in life. It is mainly because of an open opportunity of exposure with cultural and family values mixed with the sex-education in the school system.
The report also discuses various concerning issues including the importance of abstinence programs, and the programs to encourage the formation and survival of healthy marriages.
