ICDsICDs (implantable cardioverter-defibrillators)

To continue proper heart pace majority of children with inborn heart disease is getting ICDs (implantable cardioverter-defibrillators).During 1980s ICDs were introduced for the first time for the adults but it is still not known whether they work in children or not Who are just 1% of total receivers of that ICDs.

The largest children study

The largest children study was summarized in a report of Journal of the American College of Cardiology on 29th April, 2008.According to the study, there is no doubt about the life-saving capability of the device but among children it gives more unsuitable shocks than it gives to adult and it is very important to observe those children that are have been treated ICDs.

Data from 443 patients

A cardiac expert at Children’s Hospital Boston named Charles Berul, MD, was the lead author of that study.Data from 443 patients who were the recipients of the device during 1992 to 2004 were analyzed. In this study pediatric heart patients and adults with inborn cardiac disease were included and the average age of the subjects were 16 years.

Unpleasant and disturbing shocks

The data of 409 subjects who had received shocks were available and 26 % were the recipients of suitable shocks from ICDs that was about four per subject. At the same time among them 21 per cent were such patients who were not suitable shock receivers an it is about the average of 6%.According to age basis 24% that under 18 years of age children were the recipients of not suitable shocks against 14% young patients.According to Berul these shocks were not harmful for life but they were very unpleasant and disturbing like to kick in the chest.

ICD,s wire disorder

Further, almos 14% of these not suitable shocks were because of the failure of the ICD wires and this problem was frequently found among the children whose life were long enough with these ICD,s than the adults have and their wires were also extended due to motion and development in the body.ICD,s wire disorder requires periodic surgery to change these wires.

Long-lasting and durable wires

Berul and his team is working with the ICDs makers to amend the programming of the device to lessen these needless shocks in children and to give them long-lasting and durable wires of that device.Device makers don’t consider children an important market but they are very important part of a bigger group, Stated Berul.

The Largest study

According to Berul their study is the largest till update in this coonection as it include new generation of these devices.
