It does not matter if you are inside the stadium and watching a real stressful football match or you are going through the same tension full moments when watching the same football match on your television screen while sitting in your own living room. You are at equal risk of getting a heart attack, says a research study conducted by the German scientists.
The problem could get even worse if you are already going undergoing some kind of cardiovascular problems. Researchers have found that the risk is almost double in case of men with pre-existing cardiovascular problems.
The scientists have been successful in identifying the types of events that could lead to such health problems. It is not only the stressful football match, but also the events like earthquakes, war, and other sporting activities that “may increase the risk of cardiovascular events”, according to Dr. Ute Wilbert Lampen from the Ludwig-Maxmilians Universitat in Munich, Germany.
There were many doubts previously about the relationship between the soccer matches and the rate of illness and deaths caused by such cardiac arrests. In order to verify related facts, the researchers went on to study the incidents of heart attacks and other types of cardiovascular problems among the people in the Munich during the period of 2006. It was an occasion of the “FIFA World Cup” that was organized in Germany.
It was observed by the researchers that specifically on the days when German national football team were playing its match, the number of people who were admitted to any hospital for emergency attention and treatments for heart attacks and other related cardiovascular problems was suddenly increased. The rate of increase raised up to even 2.7 times higher that the normal times. It was also observed that the problem was more common among the men compared to the women.
Researchers also found that the people who had pre-existing cardiovascular problems were having a four times more risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events compared to the normal conditions.
The rate also rose at the four times when the German team was playing a football match compared to any other day when other teams were playing their matches.
It was even more surprising to note that even the people who did not have any type of cardiac problems also were at double the risks for such an event when the German national football team was playing its match.
Researchers observed that the maximum risk was at the time period of two hours within the finishing of a football match. The risk however, was observed to be diminishing with the time as the level of stress and anxiety reduced with time.
Dr Wilbert-Lampen concludes this study, “Viewing a stressful soccer match more than doubles the risk of an acute cardiovascular event”. Scientists also feel it very necessary to ensure all the preventive measures in case of people who have pre-existing cardiovascular problems.
