The credit goes to New York City Health officials and federal judge who compel the NY Food-chains to post details of calories on their menus and menu boards. If these chains do not obey the new rules, they will have to face $2000 per store penalties.
According to New York City Health Officials more than half of New York citizens are obese and they believe that people will surly consider at least twice before consuming a 1000 calorie lunch while there are only 1200-1500 calorie require per day.
These officials are also quite hopeful that these postings will lead people towards a ‘dieting by guilt’ approach and help them to reduce their waistlines and avoid other obesity related diseases like heart attack, stroke, blood pressure, diabetes, cancers and many other. It has been confirmed by the American Cancer Society as well as from the Surgeon general office’s high level ranking officials that the risks of all leading diseases greatly increase because of obesity. They also admit that obesity has become an epidemic in the United Sates.
Smoking was banned in all bars and restaurants of the New York few years back and now this law of posting calories feels quite sensible as obesity causes more deaths in the U.S. than smoking.
Now if you are in New York and taking your lunch that includes a Big Mac, Fries and large coke, you will be aware that you are consuming 1350 calories and it may spoil the taste of all this stuff. But if you aren’t quite health conscious or forget everything about good health with the sight of delicious food, these posting wouldn’t make difference for you and you may take them mere hollow words.
It becomes quite easy to estimate, why obesity has become an epidemic, with some information. Any extra calorie we consume but don’t burn it, converts into fat and stores in our adipose tissue. Our bodies are quite inclined to do that’s the reason we begin to gain weight easily.
The new rules are the part of the anti-obesity campaign that forced the different restaurants to remove Trans fats from their menus. After months of court battle the new rules had to undergo some changes when they first were passed in 2006.
Because of the delay in legal action, the new calorie posting rule wasn’t implemented in May as it was due in this month. Now the Saturday has been announced as a date for the implementation of that rule.
Professor Jay Snaric who is author of the 9th Law Diet Plan says in this connection, “We need to take steps against this epidemic and the education can serve as the best tool for this purpose. We all know well how important the role of nutrition is and I think it is indeed a very good decision by the courts that requires restaurants and food-chains to post the calorie facts on menus and boards.”
There are many would surely think at least twice about ordering some stuff while eating out but such people are also not in less who would reckon these posting mere words and would take care only of their enticing taste buds.
