World leaders and philanthropists announced to give nearly $3bn to fight malaria. The meeting at the UN also looked at ways to meet the Millennium Development Goals that aimed to reduce poverty worldwide by 2015.

Donors are quite hopeful that the funds will be sufficient to wipe out malaria by that time.

The funds include $ 1.6bn from the Global Fund to fight Malaria, Tuberculosis and aids while the World Bank will provide $1.1bn.

The rest of the funding has been promised by the British government and private organization like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

According to the World Health Organization, Malaria causes more than a million deaths each year.

The money will support quick implementation of Global Malaria Action Plan (Gmap).

In a statement, World Bank President Robert Zoellick said that the extra would help to decrease the number of malaria-related illness and deaths in the next three years.
Gmap estimates show that if the plan is implemented in a right way, more than 4.2 million lives can be saved from 2008 to 2015.

To reassure the world that the set targets are achievable, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown joined the presidents of Rwanda and Tanzania as well as the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame said that there was more than 60% decrease in malaria deaths in Rwanda.
