Facial Tingling or Pain Caused by Bulging Disc in Cervical Spine

Written by Dr Gauresh

Can facial numbness or pain arise from a bulging disc ? Yes.

It is interesting to note, that cervical disc bulges can also lead to facial symptoms (1). It is frequently seen as neck pain involving the shoulder and also extending to the face. However, sometimes it may even occur without any neck involvement. Earlier it was thought to occur due to an overt sensitivity of the patient. Sometimes it was even considered that the patient is feigning the pain for better insurance claims. And thus, the patient had to unnecessarily suffer an emotional predicament in making people believe that he/she does suffer from pain. And this was even after the cause of the disease (bulging discs), had already been seen on MRI but frequently ignored by physicians as normal. However, it has been documented in many research papers, that bulging cervical discs can cause facial pain, tingling or numbness along with neck pain or even without it. This is called cervicogenic facial pain.

Bisphosphonates in Osteoporosis

Written by Dr Gauresh

Osteoporosis is a common health problem in elderly females. This is mostly because of the abrupt hormonal changes taking place after menopause, and so is called postmenopausal osteoporosis. The word “osteoporosis” perfectly describes the disease, which consists of cellular changes leading to thinning (increased porosity) of bones (Gk. osteon = pertaining to bones). This is followed by bone pains, fractures from trivial falls, and so on. The spectrum of symptoms in osteoporosis is endless, but the cause is frequently the same, a functional imbalance in bone tissue.

Kienbocks’s Disease Symptoms

Written by Dr Gauresh

Kienbock’s disease is limited to the wrist, but it can cause symptoms ranging from wrist pain to even frank depression. This is mainly because of the functional restraints imposed by the disease. It is also related to the inability to find complete relief from symptoms despite trying several treatment options. The exact cause of the disease is still not properly understood. Hence, the treatment options offered to a person, are highly variable, depending on the experience of the orthopedic surgeon.

Kienbock’s Disease Investigations

Written by Dr Gauresh

The basic diagnosis of Kienbock’s Disease can be done on plain X-ray of the wrist. But due to lack of obvious findings, and the obscured view of the lunate bone on a wrist x-ray (Picture 1), only an expert orthopedist can identify this disease. There is always reason to doubt the judgment of a primary care physician in this regard. Therefore, in order to eliminate the risk of not identifying this disease, many physicians prefer to use higher investigations like CT Scan and MRI. Also, one should note the fact that, even though CT scan is cheaper than MRI, it diagnoses this disease better and is also used for staging.

Multiple Myeloma Treatment

Written by Dr Gauresh

Multiple myeloma treatment is a highly complicated issue. Not only is the procedure cumbersome, but with each option there are a significant number of pro’s and con’s attached. Understanding the significance is perhaps the last thing on the mind of the affected person due to the life-threatening nature of the disease itself. However, it is this process that decides the ultimate fate of an individual. Surprisingly, it is quite true that treatment options like stem cell transplant, which seem to offer a complete cure, are strongly associated with mortality themselves. Hence, treatment options must be wisely chosen !
